Compact Bone
Lacunae are the pockest where osteocytes (bone cells) live. In this slide prep, only the lacunae remain. Canaliculi are formed during development and remodeling. They are cytoplasmic extensions that connect one osteocyte with another. In effect, the cells provide life lines for each other as they are housed within a bony matrix of collagen and calcium phosphate crystals. Calcium phosphate is, in fact, cement.
